What’s Cashrewards?
Cashrewards is an Australian cashback rewards program with over 1,600 partnering merchants. Merchants pay Cashrewards a commission when a Cashrewards member makes a purchase at their store online or in-store. Cashrewards will then share part of that commission as cashback and pay it directly into the member’s account.
Hackathon
The goal of our Hackathon challenge is to work within a small team to create an innovative product idea or improvement for the company. We were given one day to work on our proposal.
Our agile team consists of three people across Marketing, Design and Development. We chose the topic — Create a new search functions to help our members find more easily what they want for the cashback.

Problem statement
Our current search logic only searches companies by tags in their name and description. This leads to poor UX as irrelevant results are surfaced for the users. ie. searching ‘tea’ gives the user ‘oneteaspoon (clothing)’ and ‘NordTeams VPN (computer)’. Additionally, there is no way to filter this list to make it more relevant for a member ie. see all food related.
What are people searching?
As found in the hotjar search results, we can see users are searching for products, merchants, non-product queries and catagories. We need to develop a search that can handle these queries and provide results that are beneficial.
Commercial search implications
Being able for merchants to bid on search results when certain keywords are searched. By designing for these capabilities we allow for scaling when it comes to ads.

Result
We won the competition and got a trophy🏆 among the about 10 teams that participated! And now that became an actual project and handed over these ideas to business team.
